Nynas originally operated solely in the Swedish market, but it is now established all over the world. New sales companies are being set up continuously, in recent years mainly in South America and Asia. The group has five refineries, with one in Belgium and two each in Great Britain and Sweden. All refineries are certified in accordance with the environmental and quality standards ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 respectively.

The business has two main business areas; Nynas Bitumen and Nynas Naphthenics. Information is shared constantly throughout the group to improve efficiency and stimulate skills development.
Nynas Bitumen produces, develops and sells bitumen. This is a material that is used as a binding agent in road construction as well as in various special applications for industrial purposes. Following the production of bitumen there are naphthenics distillates. These are used for feedstock to naphthenic oils and excess distillates are sold as specialty Fuels — mainly in the marine market. Nynas Naphthenics concentrates on highly refined oil products that are used in a wide range of areas, from lubricants to rubber and in transformers.
The manufacturing operations are carried out by Nordic Refining, which co-ordinates the group’s refinery functions. Its long history of specialisation means that in contrast to its competitors it can invest all its resources in development within its two core areas. Our main competitors are predominantly made up of major global oil companies. To many of them, bitumen and naphthenic oils are seen as merely by-products – at least in volume terms. For Nynas these “by-products” are core products!
